Why should we support Fairtrade?
We drink coffee everyday, Right! Why not? Why not Fairtrade? What is Fairtrade? How does Fair Trade supports communities around the globe?
Quality coffee is grown at high elevations and can be difficult to harvest.The beans require a tremendous amount of manual labor and without Fair-Trade they are at the merci of global prices that can soar or crash in a year. When the market price is higher than the Fairtrade minimum price, growers should receive the current market price or the negotiated price at contract. Today the minimum price for Organic Arabica Coffee is .30 per lb.
Why buy Organic Fairtrade coffee?
It helps support families year around by providing a year around social platform that can provide, food, medical, and education. There are growing cycles and usually the harvest ends in February / March. Therefore by May or June the small plantation farmers have used up their money. This means their family has to really cut back,eat less, maybe borrow money from friends etc just to survive and thus going into debt. Fairtrade helps them provide financial balance throughout the year. It’s an Insurance policy. If the price for coffee is higher than the current Fairtrade price, the plantation owner ( farmer ) receives the higher price. If the world market falls and the price goes below the Fairtrade minimum level, it comes up to a reasonable price. Most importantly, the coffee cooperatives vote on how to use the extra money, build schools ( classrooms) or a medical clinic or even a road to improve the movement of the coffee. There is nothing more satisfying than helping others.
